Avian Awareness Audio 3D Waveform Series

The world’s creatures come and go, but what remains once they’re gone? As humanity advances technologically, we develop new ways to archive the fleeting world around us. We record through drawing, photography, sound, video, DNA, etc. However, this all we have left once an animal disappears. The intention of this piece is to highlight and bring awareness to the fragility of the world’s animals, in this case, Birds. The birds showcased in this series are of three recently extinct/ critically endangered species: the Dusky Seaside Sparrow, the Spix’s Macaw, and the Bachman’s Warbler. I extracted the audio waveforms of their songs and calls, 3D printed them, and then painted them with an acrylic black developed by artist, Stuart Semple, that reflects little to no light. This dark void effect created by the paint is meant to convey the departure of these species and their lack of presence on Earth. Nominated for the URECA Art Exhibition of Spring 2017, and won an honorable mention from SBU's Interim Dean of Students, Jerry Stein. 2017.
